Freshwater Gear List

What you need on the water


Rod Weights (choose based on water & fish size):

  • 2–3 wt — small streams, tight quarters, dry-fly fishing
  • 4 wt — all-around light trout rod
  • 5 wt (most common) — best all-around trout rod for dries, nymphs, and light streamers
  • 6 wt — windy conditions, bigger rivers, larger streamers or hopper-dropper rigs

Reel:

  • Lightweight trout reel with a smooth drag
  • Reel should balance the rod
  • Backing: 50–100 yards of 20 lb Dacron

Fly Line:

  • Weight-forward floating line (WF) — trout standard
  • Optional: sink-tip or full-sink for lakes/streamers

Dry Flies:

  • Adams (sizes 12–18)
  • Elk Hair Caddis (14–18)
  • Parachute PMD/BWO (14–20)
  • Hopper patterns (summer)

Nymphs:

  • Pheasant Tail (14–20)
  • Hare’s Ear (14–18)
  • Zebra Midge (18–22)
  • Prince Nymph (12–16)
  • Perdigons

Streamers:

  • Woolly Bugger (4–10)
  • Sculpin patterns
  • Zonkers
  • Thin Mint

LEADERS & TIPPET

  • 7.5' or 9' tapered leaders
  • Sizes: 3X–6X (match conditions & fly size)
  • Tippet spools: 3X, 4X, 5X, 6X (fluorocarbon for nymphs/streamers, mono for dries)

TOOLS & ACCESSORIES

  • Nippers
  • Hemostats/forceps
  • Floatant for dry flies
  • Sinking gel or putty
  • Split shot
  • Indicators (air-lock, yarn, or bubble)
  • Hook sharpener
  • Tippet holder
  • Fly patch

WADING GEAR

  • Waders: breathable chest waders (Simms, Orvis, Patagonia)
  • Boots: Felt or rubber-soled, studs if needed
  • Wading belt: non-negotiable for safety
  • Wading staff: for fast or slippery rivers

CLOTHING & WEATHER

  • Moisture-wicking base layers
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Wool or synthetic socks
  • Sunglasses (polarized amber/copper lenses)
  • Hat (bill helps spot fish)
  • Gloves (optional, cold weather)

  • Sling pack, chest pack, or hip pack
  • Fly boxes (dries, nymphs, streamers)
  • Water bottle or hydration system
  • Small first-aid kit
