I just recently had the opportunity to take a quick fishing travel adventure back to San Pedro, Belize, with my best bro @riverhousewwr and to fish with superstar @silverghostbelize. As far as the giant permit I am holding, well, that’s an awesome story—maybe one of the best stories that I’ve been a part of since I started fly fishing. Here it goes: We were on our third incredible guided day with Gordy. He was giving us plenty of shots at different schools of permit, but we weren't connecting and were screwing up royally. Dan was on deck, and it was about to be my turn. We both were getting good shots, but as the day was winding down, all we wanted was to touch one of those permit again. Suddenly, we saw some fins popping up fairly close to the boat. Dan saw them and made a decent cast, leading them by about 10 feet. He started to strip slowly, and all of a sudden, boom, he was hooked up! Away the line took off. Dan cleared the line as he was supposed to, but then a nest formed in the line. Luckily, the line made it through the guides. I thought, oh no, we’re about to lose this fish. Just then, Gordy, our guide, ran up and untangled the nest quite quickly, and away the enormous fish took off again. That was a close one, we all thought. As we were going back and forth in the fight, somehow the line got caught on the side of the reel and broke. At that point, I was thinking, damn. I grabbed the other end of the line. Fortunately, we had about three feet until the backing started. I did a quick knot, and away the fish went again—thank God the knot was holding. As we tried to get the permit under control, the fish made another run. We were hoping this would be the last one, but the crazy permit took a turn toward shore, right towards some coral reef heads, and it was just our luck that the fish wrapped around two pieces of coral. By this time, we thought the fish would break off. Gordy yelled down at me, "Hey Chico, if you want to see this fish, you better jump your ass out and go get it untangled from the coral." I said, "Yes, sir," slipped my boots on, and jumped out of the boat into waist-high water. I started running as fast as I could toward the coral and got there just in time to untangle it right before the fish made its last run. Wow, talk about a battle of all battles between men and fish. We finally managed to get the fish in. It sure was one hell of a battle, and we were all super stoked on finally landing this fish, big thanks to our guide Gordy for putting us on some great fish time and time again. These are the memories I love making during my adventure travel experiences!
